DIBZ – On-Site Festival Activations for Major Telecom Brand

Project Overview

A major telecommunications provider needed a seamless way to run on-site prize activations at several large outdoor summer music festivals. Attendees needed to quickly opt into contests, receive notifications, and claim prizes — all without requiring an app.

DIBZ managed the overarching activation and contracted me as the Lead UX Designer to design the digital experience end-to-end.

The Challenge

Festival environments are noisy, crowded, and unpredictable. The client needed:

  • A fast, intuitive opt-in flow
  • Prize notifications attendees would actually notice
  • A reliable barcode-based redemption system
  • Messaging flexible enough for three different festivals
  • A solution that respected SMS/MMS message limits

The experience had to remain smooth in poor lighting, loud surroundings, and inconsistent cell reception.

My Role

As Lead UX Designer, I was responsible for:

  • User flows for all three festivals (21 total)
  • UX writing (scripts, prize language, notifications, instructions)
  • MMS layouts and barcoded redemption screens
  • Visual assets, including GIFs and promotional messaging
  • High-fidelity mockups and prototypes
  • Collaboration and hand-off with the DIBZ development team
  • On-site QA support during live festival activations

I worked closely with the DIBZ CEO, Dev Lead, and the telecom provider’s marketing team.

Solution

We created a QR-code-based contest system that allowed attendees to:

  • Scan a posted QR code to instantly opt into the contest
  • Receive real-time prize notifications via SMS/MMS
  • Use a unique barcode at the activation booth to claim prizes
  • View instructions tailored to the festival, time of day, and prize type

The solution was lightweight, high-impact, and fully app-free.

Process

  • Gathered requirements from the telecom provider and documented open questions
  • Defined scope, constraints, and messaging rules with DIBZ leadership
  • Created UX copy and messaging guidelines for each festival
  • Designed MMS layouts, GIFs, and supporting visual assets
  • Developed high-fidelity user flows for three distinct festival journeys
  • Collaborated with the DIBZ development team for implementation
  • Supported on-site QA during live festival activations

Results

  • Strong attendee participation across all festivals
  • Smooth, error-free prize redemptions using barcoded MMS
  • Positive feedback from festival staff and partner teams
  • Efficient messaging flows that stayed within SMS/MMS budgets
  • High brand engagement for the telecom sponsor

Lessons & Impact

  • App-free experiences excel in high-noise, high-distraction environments
  • Clear UX messaging dramatically reduces staff workload
  • Consistent visuals across festivals strengthened brand trust
  • The strong results contributed to ongoing interest in future activations
